Countertop Estimate

Net square footage and slab requirements

Estimated Jumbo Slabs

2 Slabs

Accounting for vein matching & seam layout (110 sq ft gross material)

Gross Countertop Surface:39.25 sq ft
Cutout Openings (Sink & Cooktop):−4.17 sq ft
Backsplash Area:+5.33 sq ft
Total Finished Net Area:40.42 sq ft
Estimated Material Cost:$3,031.25
Fabrication Note: Cutouts (sinks and cooktops) do not reduce stone slab costs because fabricators purchase full rectangular slabs and cut openings on-site. Grain direction and seam placements typically require 20–25% extra material.

How It Works & Calculation Formula

Formula Summary: Total Area = Σ(Section Length × Depth) + Backsplash Area. Slab Count = ceil(Fabrication Area × 1.25 ÷ Slab Size).

Step-by-Step Calculation:

  1. Calculate gross surface area of all sections (e.g. main run, kitchen island, breakfast bar).
  2. Deduct sink and cooktop cutouts for net finished area.
  3. Calculate 4" or full-height backsplash area: Total Length × Backsplash Height.
  4. Add 20–25% fabrication allowance for slab vein matching, waterjet kerf, and corner seams.
  5. Divide by standard jumbo slab size (~55 sq ft / 5.1 m²) to estimate stone slabs required.

Worked Example Calculation

Sample Inputs:

  • Section 1:120 in × 25.5 in
  • Section 2 (Island):72 in × 36 in
  • Backsplash:4 inches high
  • Sink Cutouts:1

Expected Output:

Net countertop area: 39.25 sq ft. Backsplash area: 5.33 sq ft. Total finished: 44.58 sq ft. Estimated slabs: 1 jumbo slab.

Practical Tips & Trade Guidelines

  • Standard kitchen base cabinets are 24 inches deep, requiring countertops with a 1.5-inch overhang (25.5 inches total depth).
  • Bathroom vanity countertops are typically 22 inches deep for 21-inch vanity cabinets.
  • Kitchen islands with seating need at least 12 to 15 inches of unsupported knee overhang (support brackets required over 10 inches).
  • Fabricators charge for full rectangular slabs, not just finished net cut surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard stone slabs average 120" × 55" (approx 45–50 sq ft), while jumbo slabs measure 130" × 65" (approx 55–60 sq ft).

Important Renovation Notice

Calculations are mathematical estimates based on standard trade conventions. Always field-verify room measurements, examine packaging labels, and check with a licensed contractor before purchasing materials or starting installation.
