Sheets to Order

19 Sheets

Each sheet: 32 sq ft (608 sq ft total board)

Drywall Screws

~608

Joint Compound

~26.7 gal

Joint Tape

~692.9 ft

Gross Wall Area:416 sq ft
Deductions (Doors/Windows):−51 sq ft
Ceiling Area:+168 sq ft
Total Coverage with 10% Waste:586.3 sq ft

Using 4 ft × 8 ft (32 sq ft standard) sheets. Installing boards horizontally across studs reduces vertical seams and produces smoother walls.

How It Works & Calculation Formula

Formula Summary: Drywall Sheets = ceil((Net Wall Area + Ceiling Area) × (1 + Waste%) ÷ Sheet Area).

Step-by-Step Calculation:

  1. Calculate gross wall area: Room Perimeter × Wall Height.
  2. Deduct doors (21 sq ft / 1.95 m²) and windows (15 sq ft / 1.39 m²).
  3. Add ceiling area if selected: Room Length × Room Width.
  4. Add 10% to 15% waste allowance for cuts and edge trimming.
  5. Divide by sheet size: 4×8 ft (32 sq ft), 4×10 ft (40 sq ft), 4×12 ft (48 sq ft), or metric equivalents.
  6. Estimate accessories: ~32 screws per sheet, 0.05 gal compound per sq ft, 1.3 ft tape per sq ft.

Worked Example Calculation

Sample Inputs:

  • Room Dimensions:14 ft × 12 ft
  • Wall Height:8 ft
  • Doors:1
  • Windows:2
  • Include Ceiling:Yes
  • Sheet Size:4×8 ft (32 sq ft)

Expected Output:

Net wall: 365 sq ft. Ceiling: 168 sq ft. Total with 10% waste: 586.3 sq ft. Sheets: 19 sheets (4×8 ft). Screws: ~608 screws.

Practical Tips & Trade Guidelines

  • Hang ceiling drywall first, then hang wall drywall from the top down so wall sheets support ceiling edges.
  • Hang boards horizontally across studs rather than vertically to reduce total seam length and hide imperfections.
  • Use 4×12 ft sheets in larger rooms to dramatically reduce vertical taped joints.
  • Use moisture-resistant green board or cement backer board in bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Horizontally. Hanging sheets horizontally spans multiple wall studs, strengthens the wall framing, and creates one continuous taped seam at comfortable working height.

Important Renovation Notice

Calculations are mathematical estimates based on standard trade conventions. Always field-verify room measurements, examine packaging labels, and check with a licensed contractor before purchasing materials or starting installation.
