Linear footage and stock piece count
7 Pieces
Each 8 ft long (56 ft total)
Miter 45-degree joints at frame corners and overlap scarf joints on long linear runs.
How It Works & Calculation Formula
Step-by-Step Calculation:
- Select trim style: Door Casing (3-sided), Window Casing (4-sided), Crown Molding, or Chair Rail.
- For door casing: (2 × Door Height + Door Width + Reveal Margins) × Opening Count.
- For window casing: (2 × Height + 2 × Width + Reveal Margins) × Opening Count.
- For crown molding and chair rails: Room Perimeter + Corner Allowance.
- Add waste percentage (10% standard, 15% for crown molding compound angles).
- Calculate required stock pieces based on commercial board lengths.
Worked Example Calculation
Sample Inputs:
- Trim Type:Door Casing
- Door Width:36 in
- Door Height:80 in
- Openings:3 Doors
- Stock Length:8 ft
- Waste %:10%
Expected Output:
Total linear trim needed: 50.5 ft. With 10% waste: 55.5 ft. Purchase 7 eight-foot stock boards.
Practical Tips & Trade Guidelines
- Crown molding requires compound miter cuts (bevel + miter angles) or cutting upside-down and backwards on a miter saw table.
- Paint or prime all trim boards before installing them on walls to minimize touch-up time later.
- Leave a consistent 3/16" or 1/4" reveal between door jambs and casing.
- Fill nail holes with wood filler and caulk trim seams with paintable acrylic latex caulk for flawless lines.
